The objective of this course is to provide an economic perspective on a variety of topics relevant to professionals working in the energy sector. The course will cover the basics of energy economics, including supply and demand dynamics, price determination, and market structure. Topics include the effects of competition and market power, the economics of scarcity, the extraction and pricing of oil and natural gas, in addition to the role of government regulation in the energy sector. Through case studies and real-world examples, students will explore the economic and environmental impacts of different policy choices, such as carbon pricing, emissions trading, energy efficiency standards, and renewable energy mandates. Overall, this course aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of energy economics and the policies aimed at balancing the interactions between energy market activity and the environment. 3 credit hours.
