An introduction to the history, thought, and culture of the Middle East and North Africa, from the emergence of Islam in the seventh century to the formation of modern Middle Eastern societies. This course will examine the long-term development of religious, social, artistic, intellectual, and political institutions in the Middle East. Readings will include primary source texts from Islamic law, philosophy, theology, poetry and mysticism (Sufism). 3 credit hours.
