A course on understanding human-induced earthquakes from the perspectives of risk analysis, physical mechanisms, and mitigation strategies. Includes induced seismicity due to hydraulic fracturing, wastewater injection, geothermal energy production, carbon capture and sequestration, mining, nuclear tests, and reservoir impoundment. Interdisciplinary approaches to understanding induced seismicity will be discussed, combining geology, seismology, and public policy. Instructor consent required. 3 credit hours.
