Neural Engineering Methods and Applications
BMEN 6393
Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science
This course will cover the design of implanted devices and methods for neural electrical stimulation and recording including devices for brain machine interfacing (BMI), deep brain stimulation (DBS), spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and peripheral nerve interfacing. Advanced techniques for addressing spatial selectivity for stimulation, adaptive stimulation, and managing the foreign body response will be discussed. The use of neural prostheses for the restoration of sensory and motor function will be reviewed. Topics covered include the nervous system, selection of neural targets, selection of stimulation parameters, requirements and selection of electrodes, and consideration of implanted hardware design and testing. The course includes topics in materials science, electrochemistry, and neural physiology necessary to inform device design. Case studies will be used to highlight selected topic areas. Recommended prerequisites: (BMEN 4360 or equivalent) and (BMEN 3200 or equivalent). 3 credit hours.
Offering Frequency: Each year
Grades: 20
Median GPA: A
Mean GPA: 3.984
