Computational Molecular Evolution
BIOL 5385
School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Principles and models of evolutionary theory at the molecular level. Evolution of nucleotide sequences in genes, pseudogenes, genomes and proteins, protein complexes, and interactions. Phylogenetics and leading quantitative models of sequence evolution; statistical methods on amino acid coevolution and its connections to molecular structure and function; protein interactions, signaling networks, and viral evolution. Computational tools and algorithms are used to study evolution at the molecular level. Work on a proposal-like project focused on current research questions in molecular evolution. Instructor consent required. 3 credit hours.
